What We Are Doing

In December 2013, Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the Computer Science for All Initiative (CS4All). The goal of this initiative is to bring a relevant, high-quality computer science education to all students in Chicago Public Schools. Through a partnership with Code.org, CPS was able to launch K-12 computer science education in 46 elementary and high schools across the City of Chicago in the first year of the initiative.

CS4All represents the largest expansion of computer science education in a major urban school district. The aggressive plan calls for Chicago Public Schools meet the following goals:

  • Offer computer science at every high school in CPS within 3 years
  • Make computer science a core graduation requirement for high school within 5 years
  • Offer computer science coursework at 25% of all CPS elementary schools
